We are receiving FTP files via soft link into our server.

Recently, we are observing there is a time stamp difference between the time when the file is received vs. the timestamp which is shown on the file.

Ex:- i have a file below which by looking at it seems to be created at around 9:28 A.M. The file is created via soft link process and it delivers the file from FTP to our server.

-rw-rw-r-- 1 asha root 889272623 Dec 17 09:28 file_test.txt

But in reality, the file got created on our server at around 9:32 A.M. where as the mtime gets displayed as 9:28 A.M.

Can some one clarify the below:

When a file is transferred via softlink, what is the timestamp for the file? Is it the time when the file transfer started or when the file transfer completed or is it some other timestamp?

Any other reasons for this time difference.

Actually, we have another process which creates symbolic links based on the above mtime timestamp. The same is failing since few days due to the difference in the mtime and the actual time when the file was received on our server.

Any suggestions / thoughts will be highly appreciated.

Regards,
Asha

man ls

And you will know which time is displayed.

Not sure what kind of ftp/sftp tool you are using.
Most of the decent ones will have an option to "preserve timestamps".

The soft link server is being used to transfer these files.

As per this log, the file transfer started at around 8 A.M. and it completed at around 9:30 A.M.

Hope this helps.
