We've had banner ads on OraFAQ for a long time. Not sure how long we've had ads embedded in articles on the front page, but I just noticed them.

The page I am typing in at the moment has an ad with a bikini-clad, anatomicially improbable CGI woman advertising computer games. I just came here from the main OraFAQ page where the ad was inviting me to date mature ladies (like the one pictured, wearing a skirt that would make her adult-aged children blush).

I would hate to be unable to access OraFAQ at work because sometimes I need it - but that is a current reality.

Any chance we could go back to tech-based advertising?

Google selects the ads automatically. As this is a tech site, one can only hope that they will serve more tech ads. What you see here is probably what happens when they run out of tech ads to display. I will investigate to see if there is a way to restrict this type of content.

One way could be to mute particular ads or block specific advertisers. This is how I control the ads and manage my google accounts. I am not sure if it would work the same way for this site.

dear rleishman

Google shows you ads based on your interest and previous visited sites. I guess your preference (or at least other guys behind same office proxy) are girls Smile

I recommend https://addons.mozilla.org/en/firefox/addon/adblock-edge/

rc3d nailed it on the head. A British Member of Parliament recently got similarly busted Laughing

Who else has been on your PC?

Hmmm, surely since the advert is for computer games, than that is his preference, no?

Huh, is it? I don't think so. Have a look at Google Ads settings

And I bet that Ross or anybody else, while working, would have a preference that "rc3d" commented.

Thanks for the link to Google ad settings. I never noticed that before. I found it thought I was a male and younger than I am. It is nice to know that I can make corrections. I realized sometime ago that it seemed to show ads based on searches and found that feature beneficial. Many times I would search for something I wanted to buy and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Over the next few days, advertisements for similar things would pop up and I have found what I wanted in some of those ads.

Welcome Barbara.

This is one of the good and worst things about Google. Using technology from the company DoubleClick, Google can determine user interests and target advertisements so they are relevant to their context and the user that is viewing them. There have had been endless discussions about this feature and still it is a matter of debate.

see screenshot. Does that mean I protect my privacy well? What does this page show to other users? Also not available?

I think the question is: What can other people see about our gender, age, languages, and interests?

see also answer from Barbara Boehmer. According to this page (see screenshot) Google knows nothing about me. I doubt very much that, for me it's not true.

Hmm...Well, I don't experiment with these things much. I just use my computer to do simple stuff like using Oracle DB for my experiments and replying to forums. So I never had issues with internet and advertisements. However, once I let a neighborhood college going boy to use my computer to access the internet, and after a day or two I observed unnecessary pop-ups and ads popping up(don't know what he did). I searched a bit, and finally I found the google ads settings fixed my problem.

Then a spyware or an adware took control of your internet browsing preferences Smile

No. I am 100% right.

Personal story:

I was adopted and grew up in a German speaking country. I speak only German. I have a white girlfriend.

In internet I browse often for Indian and Desi Girls. Now my girlfriend sees ads about Indian and Desi Girls. We only share the same IP address (not computer). I am lucky that she didn't found out.

While I don't doubt your story, it doesn't match my experience. I get almost exclusively Oracle and Dell ads (now) on OraFAQ, yet I never search for them (although my desktop is a Dell?). Conversely, I work with SQL Server, which I don't know very well, and I search on it all the time, yet I don't see ads for it.
I work in a pretty open office space, with my screen visible as people walk to and from the kitchen. I try to keep my browsing of dating sites - in fact, pretty much all sites hosting liberally minded mature ladies - to a bare minumum Smile

Anyway, it went away after that one day and now I'm enjoying Oracle and Dell once again.

PS. Just refreshed to preview this post. TOAD + Dell FTW! I very much suspect it might use keywords from the page in addition to search histories, and the thread I was reading had too many TO_DATE references.

It sounds like it may use a combination of things searched for, websites browsed, and page content to determine ads displayed.

I guess I should be glad it was just a "dating" service advertising ladies. I'm sure there's numerous occasions when I have started a SQL with "SELECT MAX ( TO_DATE ...". Sure, MAX can be a girl's name too, but I still reckon I dodged a bullet.

And now I shall very tenatively glance over my shoulder as I click Preview ....
