Following Maaher's description of his APEX 5 install,
http://www.orafaq.com/forum/mv/msg/197141/636317/#msg_636317
I thought I'ld offer up my experience of this morning, installing on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I didn't have the hassles that he did Smile

I created a new 12.1.0.2 EE DB, using the DBCA Gen Purpose template. I didn't apply any patches. The template comes with APEX 4.2.5.00.08, but unlike Maaher I did not bother to de-install it.

I ran the apexins.sql script, then (becuse the EPG is all I need right now) apex_epg_config.sql and (because this is Windows) apxldimg.sql. Unlocked the ANONYMUS account, created an http listening endpoint with dbms_xdb_config.sethttpport, restarted the instance, and it all works. No problems at all.

Now I'm working on using RAS as my APEX authentication service, which I think is going to be very useful for many sites.

On a related topic, my production APEX 5 instance (DB 12.1.0.1 SE on Linux, with Glassfish and Apache) is running fine. The company I work for offers a really cheap APEX hosting service, we are moving customers over to APEX 5 right now,

Overall, it looks to me (so far) that move to APEX5 is pretty much hassle free.

--update: I should have mentioned, I'm using non-CDB for this. Maaher was using CDB.

The main difference is that I used the Oracle provided Virtualbox appliance. I did not install any Oracle product myself, the virtual machine was prepared by Oracle and is available to all (link). But it is a relief to see that an install succeeds without problems.
