i have 1 data block for 'employees' and another for buttons. i am trying to create a button that will go to next record of employees. i tried the simple 'when-button-pressed' trigger with 'next_record;', but it seems to not work

That'll be because when you click on the button it'll go to the button block.
Either add a go_block before the next_record or move the button to the employees block.

Moving it to the employees block probably isn't the best idea. It has tabular layout so button will appear in every row. OK, it can be fixed by setting appropriate property (set it to be display only once) and relocated somewhere else, out of other data. But, I prefer the first suggestion - use GO_BLOCK and leave button where it is.
