Hi,
we've a stragne behaviour on one of our C/S Combinations. We installed an Oracle 8.1.7.0 on HP-UX and the Client on W2k. As we try to send an tnsping from client to Host we got ORA 12145 - Could not resolve Service name. But a connect via SQLPlus will work properly.
What could cause the difference in our environment ??

if you can connect to server from client,
after logged in check whether you are connecting the correct database!!
the following will give the name of the database.

sql>select name from v$database;
