Use the Export utility of your 8i database to export the 9i database. Shouldn't pose too much problems.

Thanks for your quick response.

It says the header is not matching. It comes out of the import.

It is not only with a particular server.

I am not in a position to import data (dmp file) from Oracle 9i to Oracle8i using the export utility (giving the import command).

kindly enlighten me.

with warm regards,

I think you misunderstood me, you should use the 8i export utility to EXPORT from the 9i and use the 8i import utility for the import in the 8i database. Leave the 9i tools for what they are, don't use them!

In the TNSNAMES.ORA file of the 8i client you're using, put an entry to the 9i database (e.g. "ORA9I").

Then you open your command prompt and perform the export using the expNN.exe of this (8i) client to perform the export of the 9i. You use the import impNN.exe to put the dump you created in the 8i database (make sure there's an entry for this database in your clients' TNSNAMES.ORA too)
In the names of the executables, NN stands for the version of exp/imp like '73' or '80' => exp73.exe ,exp80.exe,...but in you're case it might be just exp.exe or imp.exe, I don't have a 8i client here, so I can't verify).

If not clear on import/export, go to http://tahiti.oracle.com and read the docs there.

In Oracle 8.1.7, it is just exp.exe and imp.exe as you suspected.

The link provided therein does not go. Kindly provide the correct link.
The situation is that in the Head office Oracle 8i (Version 8.1.5) is running on UNIX. There are 5 sub-offices at different locations. two of which are new, provided with Oracle 9i running on LINUX.
The Head office and the sub-offices are not inter connected.
The data are being transferred across only through floppy, DAT drive, etc.

I have gone through the scripts available on this site. There are scripts like CATexp7.sql, etc. Is there any such script for data transfer from Oracle 9i to the lower version of Oracle.

Kindly update me further.
