We have a selection in my area between Oracle 9i and MySQL (version 4.1) for our databases that are used as back end for Web Applications built with Cold Fusion and JSP/Servlets.

I am trying to find the advantages of using Oracle (my preference) over MySQL. Please advise how Oracle is better than MySQL.

MYSQL is easier to install & support.
Since you had to ask this question, I conclude Oracle would be a sub-optimal choice for you.

Also, did you consider price you'd have to pay for these products? Did you have Oracle Express Edition in mind (which is free, but with some limitations)?

Price is not an issue and I have many instances available for me to use.

My Web applications dont use alot of tables per application and they dont have alot of heavy processing in the database but I like Oracle Client and working with triggers, sequences and the availability of PL/SQL.

I was hoping I can convince other people I work with to use Oracle over MySQL. Everyone likes MySQL (we have older version - 4.1) because it has autonumbering, easier to use and no privilege issues.

... and all of them are licensed? I'm NOT saying that you are doing anything illegal (God forbid!), it's just that using Oracle for educational purposes (free of charge) is different from putting your development efforts into production (which should be charged).

Oracle isn't cheap, so - either you are wealthy, or work for a company that licenced its Oracle product(s) or ...

Thanks, I saw many opinions from the Google results saying: "mysql and oracle. It depends what you're using it for

It seems it will come down to the actual requirements (and price) and what I am using it for which is the same situation I had when comparing my use of Java or Cold Fusion.
